We had our first deep freeze Saturday night (22F). I covered most of my annuals and they survived but my first year dahlias got zapped.
I'm not sure if the dahlias are worth the trouble. Dahlias are a late summer blooming bulb. They put out a large amount of beautiful flowers which I often cut and put in the house.
The downside is they grow on a large, spindly plant the can't support its own weight. That takes away from their beauty in the garden. Furthermore, the bulbs will probably not make it through our winter so they have to be dug up, stored inside and replanted next year.
I guess I'll give it a try one more year.
