Jason Giambi, Yankee first baseman, has been cajoled and pressured into discussing his use of anabolic steroids and human growth hormone with Major League Baseball (MLB) investigator, George Mitchell. I have no idea what baseball thinks it will learn.
There is no doubt that some baseball players have used performance enhancing drugs. These drugs are illegal. They shouldn't have done it. Professional baseball played ostrich instead of controlling the use of these drugs. This makes MLB culpable. They shouldn't have done it.
MLB was embarrassed by the US Senate in front of the whole Nation. They had to do something about the problem. Naturally, they've done what the Senate does. They wrote a new law and established a committee to study the problem.
The Commissioner's office is turning into Salem, Massachusetts. The witch hunts are in progress. Now, they might find a witch or two but they will never find them all. Some may get burnt who shouldn't. What they do to the witches after they burn their reputation is unknown.
Whatever happens, Baseball will not be better off. If Giambi is burned, no one else will admit drug use like he did. Will we be subjected to endless investigations, accusations, charges and counter charges? I see nothing good coming of this.
Major League Baseball needs to admit its failures and the failures of its players. It must admit that nothing can be done with the record books. It must show it has the problem under control now and move forward. That's how I see it.
