CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

The Reds opened the week with a home series against the Dodgers. The Reds took two of three - three of the ugliest games imaginable...but, a win is a win.

Reds pitcher Edinson Volquez received a 50 game suspension from Major League Baseball for violating its drug policy. He failed a test this Spring. He claims it had to do with a fertility drug he was taking so he and his wife could have children. He wasn't due to pitch before the suspension was lifted in any case.

Joe Morgan of Big Red Machine fame was hired by the Reds as a special consultant. Joe is moving back to town and will be part of a new diversity effort by the team and baseball in general.

The Bengals took a tight end from Oklahoma in the first round of the draft. He's bigger than me but we both caught the same number of passes last year. In the second round, they picked a very tall defensive end from Florida who has the rep of being lazy. In the third round, the Bengals chose a wide receiver from Texas who missed two college seasons with injury.

On the third day of the draft, the Bearcats' Mardi Gilyard went to the Detroit Lions and Tony Pike was curiously picked by the Carolina Panthers. The Panthers had already taken a QB in an earlier round.

The Reds had a weekend series here with the San Diego Padres who were in first place in the West. The Reds won just one of three to bring their season record to 8 wins 11 loses.

:o)
