On this date in 1965, a Thursday, I got engaged to be married. Its almost embarrassing how unromantic the night went.
While driving around aimlessly in my car, I came up with the greatest line of all time, "Do you want to get a ring?" Pretty suave, wasn't I? We drove to Swifton Shopping Center; walked into a jewelry store; picked out a solitaire that fit and were done. The sales clerk tried to sell me the matching wedding band but I declined because we had spent all the money I had in my pocket...he threw it in because it was a matched set. (I'm sure my sweet wife remembers a lot more of the details.)
Be kind! We were under a lot of pressure. The next morning, I was inducted into the U.S. Army.
