On this date in 1972, the 16 survivors of a plane crash high in the Andes mountains were transported to safety. They had spent 73 days in the bitter cold; surviving an avalanche and living on the flesh of those that had died. Two of the group made a 10-day trek across a mountain top to find a rancher and alert those that had abandoned the search for their downed aircraft.
The survivors were part of a rugby football team. Their physical fitness and toughness was a big factor in their survival. When the whole story was told, the question of the ethics of cannibalism was a common topic of discussion around the world.
Would you or wouldn't you?
