On this date in 1982, the first victim of the Tylenol Murders died. Someone managed to get Tylenol pills and capsules laced with cyanide into bottles in stores Chicago, Illinois. In all, seven people died before all products were taken off of the shelf. The case is still unsolved and a $100,000 reward remains unclaimed.
The murders caused radical changes in the methods that medicine and food products were packaged and delivered. At that time, anyone could open a container and then close it without detection. The inner seals you find under the cap of your aspirin tablets, under the lid of your peanut butter and even inside your can of cashews is a direct result of this case. Additionally, medicines which were only available in pill and capsule form were then made in caplets which are harder to contaminate.
Never accept a medicine or food product which shows signs of tampering.
