On this date in 1964, The Beatles performed on the Ed Sullivan Show for the first time. The Ed Sullivan Show was a Sunday evening, prime time, variety show. They drew 73 million viewers (at the time, a record for U.S. television).
The Beatles were in the U.S. for a series of concerts. Sullivan had them on three weeks in a row while they were here. It was a high point in the British Invasion of our music industry. In succession followed The Dave Clark Five, The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, Herman's Hermits and The Who.
