On this date in 1937, Walt Disney premiered the world's first full length animated feature film. It was the musical fantasy "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs".
It couldn't have been released today. "Dwarfs" is too stigmatic for little people as determined by big people. Most people could handle calling someone "Happy" or "Doc" but it would be bullying to call someone "Bashful". "Sleepy" might make it into the script but "Grumpy" is way too judgmental. We could never pick on people with allergies by calling them "Sneezy". I'm certain that "Dopey" is too cruel a name to place on anyone today.
When the story was first developed, about fifty names were considered for the seven dwarfs. Here are the best that got rejected: Jumpy, Deafy, Dizzey, Hickey, Wheezy, Baldy, Gabby, Nifty, Sniffy, Swift, Lazy, Puffy, Stuffy, Tubby, Shorty and Burpy. Walt himself made the final decision on names.
Thank Goodness he rejected Baldy.
