When I was a kid, I lived in a middle class neighborhood, I suppose. The houses were close together but everyone had a small front and large back yard. Everyone had a garage but they were detached from the house. The streets were narrow but there were sidewalks on both sides of the street. I lived across from an elementary school yard which was a dirt baseball field at first and later paved. Good basketball courts were built when it was paved. I always had great access to sports.
One interesting thing to note, there was a drinking fountain installed on the sidewalk across from my house. You don't see that any more.
