STRANGE PLACES

There is a city in Thailand called Phuket.  Do you think it rhymes with bucket?

There is a city in Norway called Hell.  Please don't tell me to go there.  There is snow on the ground most of the year.

Having traveled through the State of Tennessee quite a few times, I propose it as the state with the most oddly named cities.  Here are some I've found:  Bugscuffle, Stinking Creek, Lick Skillet, Sweet Lips, Nankipoo, Horny Head Creek, Flippin, Gassaway, Hoodoo, and Nameless.  Would you admit that you lived in any of these cities?

We have friends, the Cartledges, who grew up in Lake City, Tennessee just north of Knoxville.  The city sits right on I-75 and is high in the mountains. They told us this story at dinner last year.  Lake City is located next to Norris Lake.  That wasn't really doing much to help the city grow.  The University of Tennessee had made the song Rocky Top a sustaining hit -  especially in Tennessee.  So, the bright city fathers decided to change the name of their town to Rocky Top.  The owners of the song copyrights sued to stop them from using that name but lost in court two years ago.  The song was recorded in 1967 and the city actually came into existence in 2014.
