Dick has a book. Jane has a doll. Spot is a dog. See Spot run.
This is how I learned to read. Me and every one else in early post World War II elementary school. Dick and Jane books were the standard texts for new readers. I think my grandchildren could read these books before they could walk. How we ever became literate is a mystery.
I grew up in a home with no books. Neither of my parents read anything except the newspaper. We received no magazines in our home that I recall. I don't think we were much different than our neighbors. I did pick up the habit of reading the newspaper - back in the day they actually had things worth reading that you couldn't find in other places. TV news was not at all what it is today.
I grew up watching my grandfather do crossword puzzles. Of course, they were much too difficult for youngsters - but I kept trying. My mother-in-law solidified my love of word puzzles. She was a master.
Now, almost all of my reading is done on a computer screen, tablet or phone. I can't imagine what the future in reading will be. My guess is that the written word will become less and less important.
