This weekend at Catholic mass, you will hear in the readings the word humility and it's related adjectives more than once. It is a fitting reminder for us. Jesus often taught the value of being humble.
Humility does not come very easily to many of us. It is more than just the absence of boasting. I think it brings us to the reason behind our actions. Yes, the full reason we do things. If we do something that humbles us, it shows little humility if we did it hoping that others will notice. If we give to the poor hoping to impress someone, we did a good thing but we've missed the humility part of it all.
We often hear about the 'meek and humble of heart'. Being meek is that step beyond being humble. Meekness indicates a person is quiet, silent. gentle and obedient. This is not what we call being an introvert though one could be confused with the other - we're not talking about being shy. The meek find no need to justify their actions or even defend themselves from abuse or harm. I pray that I could be more meek and humble.
Jesus famously told a large crowd: "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." My interpretation of this remark is: "Those who ask for nothing, will receive everything."
Ask for nothing!
