We have an extraordinary number of feasts, special events and holidays this time of year. I'm afraid some are so powerful that they overshadow and even black out some of the others. I'll innumerate them for your benefit. You will see that there is a lot more to be thinking about than Christmas gifts, bills and New Year's parties.
Dec 25 Feast of the Nativity, Christmas; the birth of Jesus
Dec 26 Feast of St. Stephen, the first martyr, he was killed for his belief in Jesus
Dec 27 Feast of the Holy Family; Jesus, Mary and Joseph
Dec 28 Feast of the Holy Innocents; the under-two-year-old boys murdered in an attempt to kill the baby Jesus
Dec 29 The Memorial of Saint Thomas Becket, bishop and martyr; he was killed by the English throne for demanding church doctrine be upheld
Jan 1 The Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God
Jan 3 Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord: an epiphany is a revelation or discovery, Three Wise Men brought gifts to the Newborn King who they affirmed was God Incarnate.
Jan 4 Feast of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton; she established the first Catholic Girls School in the U.S. and many more to follow
Jan 5 Feast of Saint John Neuman; U.S. bishop to first organize a diocesan Catholic School system (Philadelphia)
Jan 10 Feast of the Baptism of Jesus
This weekend, remember that the Magi came to honor God. Jesus is God as well as man.
God Bless You!
