This weekend at Catholic mass, the fourth Sunday of Easter, we celebrate what has traditionally been called Good Shepherd Sunday. Our readings all reflect that.
This year we have a very short Gospel passage from John. Even though shepherding is foreign to most of us 'city folk' it should still provide a clear image. Flocks of sheep stay together for the most part. Shepherds stay with them day and night. If a sheep strays from the flock, the shepherd is supposed to retrieve it. You get all that. Shepherds at this time didn't have sheep dogs; just a crook. Now listen to the Gospel verse - this one's so short I'll repeat it all in my own language.
Jesus said, "My sheep hear my voice and they know me by it. I know each of them and where I go they follow me. I give them eternal life. No one can take them from me."
Jesus went on to say, "My Father gave me these sheep. My Father is greater than all and these sheep are His. No one can take them from Him. The Father and I are one."
Be a sheep! a lamb! Follow Him to where He will take you.
Have a great weekend. I love you.
