On this date in 1865, President Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth in Ford's Theater Washington, DC. He died of that gunshot the next morning. (You can read a very interesting blog entry I did on this subject by searching 2/12/2019)
On this date in 1902, J.C. Penny opened his first dry goods store. It was in the thriving metropolis of Kemmerer, Wyoming. Location; location; location!
On this date in 1912, the "unsinkable" Cruise Ship Titanic was struck by a large iceberg in the North Atlantic. It sank the next day. (It is very important that you try whatever interests you. Remember that amateurs built the Ark and professionals built the Titanic.)
On this date in 1931, John Steinbeck published his classic novel The Grapes of Wrath. It is the story of migrant workers during the Great Depression and their travels through the Dust Bowl in Oklahoma.
On this date in 2010, a large volcano in Iceland (with way too many letters in its name) erupted throwing ash miles into the air and disrupting air traffic between the US and Europe for days.
There were also some great Cincinnatians born this date. Peter Edward Rose in 1941 and JoAnn Arand in 19 some time after that. (I know and wont tell).
