The word dire is an adjective meaning critical, extreme, or indicating horror or disaster. You know it's a dire situation when something bad is probably going to happen. Some how, an animal got the name dire wolf. The dire wolf is a canine creature that has been extinct for about ten-thousand years.
Archioligists have uncovered remains of this creature in the Americas - they might have lived where you do right now. Their bones that have been uuncovered indicate that they lived between 125,000 and 10,000 years ago. Some bones were found in the tar pits of California. Tar is so tough it actually preserves things.
So, why did I bring this up? Well, you've probably seen the movie Jurassic Park or one of it's type. There's this island with pre-historic creatures on it that some scientitsts cloned from some DNA found in a fossil. Fun show but outlandish idea, right?
It's evidently happened. A company named Colossal Bioscience claims it has cloned three dire wolves from DNA found in a fossil. Yes, 10,000 years after they went extinct, we now have dire wolves living with us. They're so cute. All white and furry. I can't wait until they try it on Tyrannosaurus Rex.
