My old friends talk a lot about memory and lack there of. When they get old, people forget things, words, events, people; short term and long term as well. Some things you remember and some you don't - no telling which or why. It's fun to remember things from way back - it makes you feel like you have memory under control. That's the way I see it.
There's another thing about memory that disturbs me. It's the things the whole country forgets.
Sunday past (12/7) was the anniversary of the Japanese attack on our naval base at Pearl Harbor and, for us, the start of World War II. As I remember, this was once a big deal. Newspapers and TV networks were primed to cover the anniversary each year. This year I heard very little, if any, coverage of the anniversary. I fear our children are losing out. History is being lost.
When I was in school, I disliked history class. Just a lot of memory work - nothing that would help me in the future. I was so wrong. My Goodness! We need great history teachers and fair history books. People can't go thru their lives making decisions based solely on their experiences. A well rounded person needs a knowledge of history to blend with his experiences to make rational choices.
That's the way I see it.
