CHANCE

CHANCE

I was drafted into the army in the fall of 1965 and was trained to be a personell specialist at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. After training, I was sent to Fort Mead, Maryland with several other guys in my class. We sat around for a month or so waiting for assignment. The army was building new units for the Vietnam war. Eventually, I was assigned to the 410th transportation company. One of my friends was assigned to the 411th and another to the 412th. All brand new companies that were being manned by a mixture of new recruits like me and veterans being brought back from Germany and other places. The 410th was assigned to Cam Ranh Bay. A relatively safe spot to be at that point in the war. The 411th was sent down near Saigon and was shot up before they ever landed. The 412th never left the states. Its just chance or luck, I guess.
