ASH TREES

ASH TREES

One of the unintended consequences of importing so many products from the Far East is bugs! Shipping crates coming from China and other Asian countries sometimes bring infestations with them in the form of insects living in the wooden packing crates. A few years ago, the Emerald Ash Borer was discovered in Michigan. It has spread to northern Indiana, Ohio and eastern Illinois. This boring beetle is transported over long distances in firewood but it can jump from tree to tree in a wooded area. It has the potential to kill all of the ash trees in North America and we have no good way to stop it. Seeds of ash trees are being preserved so that if and when they are all eradicated a new crop could be started for future generations.
