CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

After an off day on Monday, the Reds opened a 3-game series against the Padres at GABP with an exciting 5-4 11-inning win. Eric Milton started the game and left in the top of the sixth with a sore elbow having given up just one run. Rich Aurilia hit a 3-run homer to put the Reds ahead in the 3rd but of course, the relief pitching allowed the Pods to come back and take the lead. The Reds tied the game 4-4 in the eighth and won it in the 11th on Jason LaRue's walk-off home run. Wednesday night was one of those nights. Kyle Lohse had a nightmare start and it went downhill from there: Final 10-0 Padres. On Thursday afternoon, the Padres stuck a fork in them and determined they were done. The 'game they just had to win' they lost 4-2. On Friday, The Reds traveled to Chicago for an afternoon tilt with the struggling Cubs and posted a slick 4-0 shutout. Bronson Arroyo won his fourth game in a row and thirteenth overall. David Ross had a 3-run homer and a double to get half of the Reds' hits. On Saturday, rookie Rich Hill pitched a 2-hit complete game 4-0 shut-out for the Cubs. The kid walked only one and struck out 10 of the fading Reds in posting the first Chicago complete game of the year. On Sunday, the Reds officially quit. Eric Milton started but only got one batter out as the Cubs trounced the Reds 11-3. The Reds scored the 3 meaningless runs in the 9th inning. The Reds ended the week 7 games behind the Cardinals in the division and 5 games behind the Padres in the wild card race. Two weeks are left in the season.

In high school football games this weekend Indian Hill beat Mariemont 28-21, Oak Hills squashed Hamilton 20-8, Columbus Bishop Waterson topped Fenwick 33-21.

Saturday afternoon, the young and outmanned Cincinnati Bearcats visited Ohio State's number 1 ranked Buckeyes and lost 37-7. The Bearcats held a 7-6 lead deep into the second quarter but couldn't stand up to their much deeper friends from Columbus. Interestingly, the Bucks kicked a long field goal right before the end of the game to push the score over the spread (29) set by the bookies in Los Vegas. Wow!

Sunday afternoon, the Bengals hosted their upstate rivals in an AFC North battle. The Bengals came out with a flawless opening drive for a touchdown and never looked backed as they beat the Browns easily, 34-17. The downside to the win was the numerous injuries sustained by the men in stripes.
