CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

A really quiet week in Cincinnati sports was brightened up in midweek when Thom Brennaman was announced as a Cincinnati Red's announcer for next year. He signed a 5 year contract to do some radio and some television in between his duties for Fox Sports. This is quite a coup for Cincinnati.

In Friday night high school football, Winton Woods beat Harrison 21-14, Fenwick was beaten by Kettering Alter 46-13, Colerain smashed Hamilton 24-0, Reading topped Mariemont 16-6 and Wilmington whipped Amelia 28-21.

Saturday afternoon, the University of Cincinnati Bearcats took on the Akron Zips and almost got zipped. The Zips came out in the first quarter and marched down the field twice without much problem and took a 14-0 lead. It looked like it was going to be a long afternoon for the Big East newcomer. But, the defense got it figured out and the offense avoided tripping over its own feet enough to earn a lackluster 20-14 win. Next week things will be a little different -- the Cats will face the top offensive squad in the country in the Louisville Cardinals.

For the last time this year, we had a Sunday without the NFL to worry about, unless you're into fantasy. The day was beautiful, bright and brisk - sternwheelers were churning water up and down the Ohio in the bi-annual Tall Stacks celebration - Lucy was blowing out both of her candles - husbands were working in their yards and, just maybe, some wives were smiling.
