CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

The week started out with an explosion on Monday night. Trouble is, the Bengals were the ones who bombed. Before a prime time national audience, they laid a big fat egg. It was a huge disappointment for us all. The final tally was 34-16.

Also on Monday, Kerry Combs who has been the very successful head coach at Colerain High School for many years agreed to take the position of defensive backfield coach for the UC Bearcat football team.

On Tuesday, the NFL announced that Chad Johnson and Willie Anderson would be starters on the AFC pro bowl team. Carson Palmer is on the team. Jeremi Johnson, Eric Steinbach, Rudi Johnson and TJ Houshmandzadeh are alternates that could go if those on the team cannot. The San Diego Chargers have nine players on the team.

Wednesday, the Musketeers hosted Bucknell University at Cintas Center. The Bisons from Ithica, NY should not have been a match for the Muskies but proved otherwise. Bucknell jumped off to an early lead on hot shooting and maintained the lead throughout the first half which ended up 33-28. The second half was more of the same. XU finally caught them and took their first lead in the game 63-62 at the 2:20 mark. The Bisons took back the lead 68-67 with 1:15 to go and neither team scored the rest of the way. Stanley Burrell was Xavier's leading scorer with 21 points.

Friday, the Reds made the headlines - twice. First, they acquired Jeff Conine from the Phillies for some minor leaguers. Conine is a late 30's guy who was once an all-star and can now fill the roll played by Rich Aurilia last year. Probably not a big change in the team as a result. Later in the day, it was disclosed that Ken Griffey Jr had broken his left hand in a mishap at his house. Its too soon to tell if he'll be ready at the beginning of the season.

On Tuesday, Fenwick beat Roger Bacon to go to 2-3 on the season. Mariemont High School topped Reading on Wednesday night to run their record to 4-1.

Saturday, the Bearcats hosted an interconference match with the North Carolina State Wolfpack of the strong ACC. The Cats played one of their better games of the year and won 80-71. Deonta Vaughn led Cincinnati with 25 points and 9 assists. Cedric McGowan had 15 and John Williams had 13 points. NC State just didn't have anybody to handle the ball. UC abused them for 32 turnovers.

Sunday the Bengals traveled to Denver for a do-or-die tussle with the Broncos. The game was played on a sunny, cold afternoon with intermittent snow flurries. Before the start of the game, they knew that a win would put them in the playoffs. Denver's offensive line could not handle our defensive front in the first half. Cincinnati could have had a good sized lead but turned the ball over 3 times and the half ended with the Bengals up 17-14. Carson Palmer was having his most inaccurate day of the year. He seemed to be a little long or a little high on most of his throws. Chad Johnson looked like he never saw snow before. In the second half, more of the same frustration was evident and add that to the fact that the Broncos figured out how to run the ball against our defense. This all made for a sad situation. The Bengals drove for the tying touchdown with 30 seconds to go but a bad snap aborted the extra point and they lost 24-23. Sad, sad, sad!
