CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

Well, the week started off like many others in Cincinnati. One of the Bengals was picked up by the police. Johnathan Joseph, our top draft pick last year, was in a car that was stopped for erratic driving and he was found to have marijuana on him. It would be funny if it weren't so sad.

The Reds traded a minor leaguer to the Oakland A's for a guy that was their 5th starter in '05 but lost that job in '06 to become a spot starter and long reliever. If you care, his name is Kirk Saarloos. The guy who was giving out vowels stuttered.

On Wednesday night, Xavier went to Olean, NY to meet the Bonnies of St. Bonaventure (5-14)and hammered their weak sister in the A10 by a score of 92-66. Justin Doellman had 20 points to lead the way. The Musketeers (14-6) shot 'lights out' in this one. One sour note: Josh Duncan took a fall in the first half and did not return to the game. It appeared to be an ankle sprain.

The UC Bearcats hosted the league leading Pitt Panthers at the Shoemaker Center and got handled by a far superior team 67-51. Pittsburgh (18-3) is too strong underneath the basket for the Cats (10-9) to handle them. On top of that, Pitt shot over 60% from the field and were deadly from the 3-point line. They could go a long way in March.

Chris Henry of the Bengals had one of his days in court on Thursday. He got two days in jail and a tongue lashing from the judge in Florence, Kentucky. When he gets out, he has to deal with drunk driving charges in Clermont County.

In prep sports this week, Mariemont (7-7) lost to Wyoming and Indian Hill; Fenwick (3-11) lost to Moeller and Purcell; Hamilton (10-5) beat Lakota West; Wilmington (12-4) lost to Lakota West but beat Hillsboro and Amelia.

Saturday afternoon, the UC Bearcats traveled to our nations capital to play the Georgetown Hoyas at the Vorizon Center in a Big East matchup. The diminutive Bearcats fought gamely but could not contend with the size of GU (15-5) and lost 82-67. For part of the second half, the Cats had a 6'4" 220 lb football player trying to cover the Hoyas' 7'2" 270 lb center.

Xavier played local and A10 rival Dayton at Cintas Center on Saturday and came away with a good 83-67 win. After playing an even first half, the Musketeers pulled away early in the second period and held a comfortable lead the rest of the way. The Flyers (13-7) were no match for the X-men today. XU put five men in double figures and Justin Doellman led all scorers with a career high 24 points.

One-time great Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Ken Anderson has joined the Pittsburgh Steelers as their quarterbacks coach. Current Cincinnati Bengals quarterback, Carson Palmer, will make his 'acting' debut next Saturday night at 8 pm on the Disney Channel.
