CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

The UC Bearcats played Villanova in Philadelphia on Wednesday night and were skunked 64-48. At one point in the first half, Nova (18-7) scored 22 straight points in 11 minutes and 35 seconds against the woeful play of the Bearcats to pretty much seal the deal. Cincinnati (10-15) shot just 34% from the field and put only John Williamson in double figures.

Mariemont won the only game they were able to play this week and improved their record to 10-9. Fenwick lost on Thursday and Friday to go to 3-17. Winton Woods is not 11-7 and Wilmington is 14-6. Hamilton Big Blue is 14-5 and leads the GMC.

Sophomore Josh Harrison homered in three straight games for the UC baseball team but they were swept by Florida Atlantic in the series.

The Bengals put the franchise tag on Justin Smith in order to protect their rights to sign him or be compensated if he leaves as a free agent. Now, I think they will be better off if he leaves.

Xavier faced off against the Richmond Spiders at Cintas Center on Saturday evening and drubbed their A10 foes by a 71-50 score. Richmond (6-19) never really challenged the Musketeers in this one. Xavier (18-7) has won 4 in a row and is playing at a high level right now. Brandon Cole had a career high 17 points to lead the Musketeers.

The Reds are checking into training camp. Optimism abounds. Watch out for reality; it usually sets in about July 1st.

Sunday afternoon, the UC Bearcats hosted the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Fifth Third Center for the first time in school history and played gamely but lost 76-64. John Williamson scored 23 for the Cats and Deonta Vaughn had 22. Notre Dame improved their record to 20-6 and seems assured of a middle round NCAA bid.
