CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

The Bengals lost offensive lineman Eric Steinbach to the Browns in free agency but tight end Reggie Kelly decided to stay. Tony Stewart (TE) and Kevin Kaesviharn (S) are looking to leave and probably will. Free agency is not being good to the Bengals.

On Thursday night, Fenwick suffered a cruel twist of fate in their miraculous run in the state tournament. Playing Oakwood, second ranked in the state in division III, the Falcons were ahead 23-10 at half time only to lose 34-31.

Also on Thursday night, Xavier blitzed Dayton on their way to the semi-finals of the A10 tournament. Only five players scored for the Musketeers but that was plenty as they rolled 72-51 in Atlantic City.

Friday night, things didn't go so well for the Muskies. They ran up against a hot shooting Rhode Island Rams team and couldn't keep up in the high scoring affair. Xavier had beaten Rhode Island 12 straight times dating back to 1998 but lost this one 79-71 to snap their own nine-game winning streak. Drew Lavender had 18 points to lead the home town crew.

On Saturday, Hamilton High lost in the district finals to St. Xavier and the Big Blue's coach for the last 10 years, Larry Allen, reportedly said he is going to retire. Withrow, Moeller and Elder are the other 3 district winners in division 1.

The Miami Redhawks pulled off the big upset in the MAC finals Saturday night with a last second, banked, 3-pointer to put themselves in the NCAA field of 65. Its quite a turn-around from early season woes that saw them lose game after game at the buzzer.

The Reds finally lost a game or two this week; not that it means anything one way or the other. What the heck is Ken Griffey doing? He's taking batting practice but hasn't taken part in a game as yet.
