CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

In the high school state basketball tournaments, boys regional finals saw St Xavier defeat Withrow and Moeller crush Newark in division I; Alter top Dunbar in division II; Purcell lose to North College Hill in division III. Mount Notre Dame won the girls division I state basketball title.

The Reds had another winning week in grapefruit league baseball. Too bad all these games are meaningless...Phenom pitcher Homer Bailey is not going to make the big team this year. He's going to AAA Louisville but may be in town before the end of the season...When will Griffey ever play?...The most interesting story in spring training is that of Josh Hamilton. If you don't know about him or even if you think you do, read the Washington Post article attached. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/02/12/AR2007021201312_pf.html

Pete Rose resurfaced to take a look at his display in the Reds Hall of Fame and stuck his foot back in his mouth.

Xavier met Brigham Young University at Rupp Arena in Lexington on Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA tournament. As most 8-9 seed games go, this one was very close throughout. Behind Justin Doellman's 23 points and Derrick Browns 16 rebounds, the Musketeers held on to defeat the Cougars 79-77 and set up a meeting with Thad Motta's Ohio State juggernaut on Saturday afternoon. If X wants to have a chance, Stanley Burrell will have to score more than the ZERO points he had on Thursday.

Lauri Pirtle resigned as UC women's head basketball coach after 21 years on the job.

The Bengals were mired in another do nothing week in off season free agency as there players are being snatched away one by one: Kelly Washington has gone to the Patriots; Kevin Kaesviharn is joining Brian Simmons with the Saints; backup defensive lineman Shaun Smith is going to the Browns to join Eric Steinbach; TE Tony Stewart is now with the Raiders.
"In Marvin we trust"?

Saturday afternoon, Xavier met Ohio State in the second round of the NCAA tournament. The Muskies played a great game but let it slip away at the end. Justin Cage (25), Justin Doellman(13) and Josh Duncan (11) shot XU into a mid second half lead that looked like it would stand up for the upset. The OSU big men were outplayed by the XU big men while Drew Lavender controlled the show. The Musketeers had a commanding 11 point lead with a little over seven minutes to play when they appeared to try to take the air out of the ball. In the end, Cage had a chance to ice the game from the foul line with 9 seconds remaining but missed the second of two. The Buckeyes sank a 3-pointer with 2 seconds on the clock to tie the game at 62 and send it into overtime. Ohio State made their first three shots in the extra period and took the starch out of the Muskies. For the record, Stanley Burrell had one basket.
