CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

The Reds continued to trim their roster and win more than they lose. They currently have the best record in all of baseball. Paul Wilson has been released for good. He has spent two years trying to recover from arm surgery and just doesn't have it. Griffey finally made his spring training debut in his new position on Saturday. The right fielder got a couple of hits.

Moeller and St. Xavier each won their semi-final games on Friday night in the state division I basketball tournament to set up an all-Cincinnati, all-GCL finale. Moeller edged St. X 43-40 to win the crown on Saturday night.

Unranked North College Hill made it to the finals in division III against top ranked Liberty-Benton and won 50-45. This is the North College Hill team that played without O.J. Mayo and Bill Walker - amazing. It is their fourth straight visit to the finals and third straight title. Junior Damon Butler won his third state championship in three years and was named the tournament's most valuable player.

Georgetown High School from Brown County just east of Cincinnati got to the finals in division IV for the first time in school history and upset top ranked Columbus Harvest Prep 50-45 to win the state title. A real rarity, both schools were undefeated going into the game.

Division II was won by Dayton Dunbar to cap an all southwest Ohio sweep of the boys basketball state championships. Ohio State center Greg Oden's brother plays for Dunbar.

Xavier University gave Sean Miller a new contract that extends to 2015 and makes him the highest paid coach in the A10. He quickly got two verbal commitments from guards for next year's class.

None other than Nancy Zimpher, UC's storied president, was named to the NCAA Board of Directors representing the Big East. Watch out Huggs. She can get you again.

Mick Cronin is doing analysis of the NCAA tournament for the Canadian television network carrying the games. He has become the best known American coach in Canada and hopes to get a good recruit or two out of it.

The Bengals made Kyle Larson their first million dollar punter and extended his contract for another year. Levi Jones got bopped in Los Vegas by the Dolphins and former Steeler linebacker Joey Porter. Several of Porter's friends joined in on the beat down. It should be real interesting next season at the Bengals-Dolphins game.

Some Kentucky fans think they might get Billy Donovan of Florida to replace Tubby Smith. My first guess is John Calipari of Memphis.

Cincinnatian, Brett Wetterich came in second to Tiger Woods at the WGC-CA Championship on Sunday. He's closing in on the top ten in the money list on tour.
