CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

On Monday, Ken Griffey Jr. was named the National League Player of the Week for his performance last week. It was the first time he won the Player of the Week award with the Reds but his ninth time overall. Griff hit .400 with 3 home runs and nine RBIs.

Also on Monday, the Bengals signed another defensive lineman, Kendrick Allen, a free agent from the Packers. He was hurt most of last year. To make room for all of the d-linemen they have been signing, they let Sam Adams go.

Monday night the Reds had to face the San Diego Padres and Greg Maddox at his best. Only a ninth inning run saved them from being shut out as the lost 7-1.

Moeller High School announced that it had reached an agreement with the University of Cincinnati to use Nippert Stadium as their home football field. That's pretty sweet for those young men.

On Tuesday night, the Reds sent their ace Aaron Harang to the mound against David Wells, a lefty. Lefthanders have been killing the Reds. Harang had a 1-0 lead going into the bottom of the ninth when he balked in the tying run. What else could happen to these Reds? He finished with a 9-inning 2-hitter and a 'no decision'. In the 12th inning, Ken Griffey Jr hit a home run to provide the winning margin as the Reds broke their losing streak 2-1.

On Wednesday night, Bronson Arroyo pitched a complete game and found a new way to lose. He walked in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth in a 3-2 loss to the Padres.

The Reds didn't lose on Thursday. The Bengals did. A.J. Nicholson did it again. He was charged with domestic violence charges. The linebacker allegedly did a swim move on a lady in his apartment. Sadly, the lady didn't have her helmet on when he whacked her up side the head. He is on probation for a similar offense.

On Friday, Cincinnati met Cleveland at the Jake. Kyle Lohse gave it a go but it wasn't good enough. The locals went down 9-4 on poor pitching and terrible defensive execution. Brandon Phillips extended his hit streak to twenty games.

On a different front, the Reds have finally filed an official grievance against the Washington Nationals regarding last year's trade. The Reds got stuck with damaged goods in the form of a sore armed pitcher and the Nationals knew it. This will be interesting. The Reds play Jim Bowden's Nationals next week.

On Saturday night, the Reds got good relief pitching and three-run homers from Brandon Phillips and David Ross. This all added up to a 10-5 win for starter Matt Belisle in Cleveland. On Sunday, Aaron Harang went to the mound and Brandon Phillips got us started with a homer. It was not enough to overcome a bad inning and added up to a 5-3 loss. The Reds ended the week at 17-27 and still in last place, 10 games behind the Brewers in their division.
