CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

After an off-day on Monday, the Reds hosted the division leading Los Angeles Angels at GABP. Bronson Arroyo got the start a pitched fairly well but it was the bullpen, if you can believe it, that saved the day. The Reds scratched out some late runs on a suicide squeeze and a sacrifice fly to win 5-3 for Bret Coutlangus.

On Wednesday night, the Angels bounced back against the Reds inflicting a 6-3 setback. Kyle Lohse started and gave up four runs in seven innings. Scott Hatteberg had a homer for the home team.

Thursday afternoon, the Reds sent Homer Bailey to the mound and he left the game with a 5-3 lead in the seventh. It was then that the rookie learned what a major league bullpen could do for you. The Reds lost 9-7. Griffey and Gonzalez had home runs in the loss.

Friday night the Reds hosted the opener of a weekend series with the Texas Rangers and set out to prove they were the worst team in baseball. In the opener, Matt Belisle got the start and gave up a grand slam to Sammy Sosa which they could not overcome in a 7-6 loss. Adam Dunn and David Ross had home runs.

On Saturday night, Aaron Harang faced the Rangers and was supported with the long ball. Griffey and Ross each had two homers and Dunn had one of his own as the Reds won 8-4.

To end the week, the Reds sent Arroyo to the hill against the Texas nine and took an 11-4 whooping. Adam Dunn stayed hot and hit two more home runs. Cincinnati managed to commit three errors in the loss.

The Reds end the week at 27-43 and 11-1/2 games out of first in the weakest division in baseball. Its sad but its true.
