The Bengals got the week going with another arrest. Rookie running back Quincy Wilson (from the University of West Virginia, of course) was arrested in West Virginia with a group of people outside a wedding reception (including the bride and groom) for failure to follow police orders and disperse.
Adam Dunn won the honor of National League Player of the Week for his play through last Sunday. Maybe it will help him get traded.
The Reds opened the week on the north side of the 'bay' with an interleague game against the Oakland A's. Kyle Lohse pitched and gave up five runs in the fifth on the way to a 6-1 setback.
Matt Allare of Kings High School was named the National High School Tennis Player of the Year. Matt won Ohio State titles in doubles his freshman and sophomore years and won the singles title in his junior and senior years. The last person from around here to get an honor like this was LeBron James in basketball in 2003.
XU got an oral commitment from 6'-4" guard Brian Walsh of Pennsylvania to complete their recruiting class of 2008. They will have three new guards and a center to add to the center, two forwards and a guard they are bringing in this year.
On Tuesday night, Homer Bailey made his first road start for the Reds and was brilliant. He gave the A's two hits and one run through seven innings. Ken Griffey knocked a homer and the Reds won 5-2.
On Wednesday afternoon, Matt Belisle pitched for the Reds and got the old wicked reliever treatment from the bull pen. Dunn homered but late-inning runs killed the Reds 5-3.
After a day off on Thursday, the Red's Ken Griffey Jr was treated to a hero's welcome back into the Seattle stadium that 'he built'. After pregame ceremonies that showed this city's love for Junior, the Reds with Aaron Harang on the mound gave the home team the worst beating they had received in thirty years. Brandon Phillips and David Ross each had two homers and Josh Hamilton had one in the 16-1 rout. Harang gave up just two hits in eight innings.
On Saturday night, the Mariners turned the tables on the Reds and Kyle Lohse. Our boys were dealt a 9-1 embarrassment that started with a Mariner grand slam in the first inning. Brandon Phillips accounted for the Redlegs only run with his third homer in two nights.
The Sunday afternoon rubber game of the three-game set went to the sixth inning with the Reds up 2-0. Griffey had two homers to account for the Reds' runs and Bronson Arroyo was throwing a shut-out. The Mariners scratched out two in the sixth and one in the seventh for the 3-2 victory before a sellout crowd at Safeco Park. The two runs in the sixth were aided by an Ichiro bunt and the winning run scored on a suicide squeeze bunt. For the Reds, it was a game of missed opportunites just like the whole season.
