Memorable quotations of my lifetime
"We will bury you."
- Nikita Khrushchev, circa 1960
Khrushchev was the chief director of the Soviet Union after the death of Joseph Stalin. He earned the nickname "Butcher of the Ukraine" in the late 1940's for his diligence in carrying out Stalin's orders. He became the First Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1953 to 1964. As First Secretary, he was the ultimate leader of the USSR. He was famous for pounding his shoe on the desk at the United Nations. His famous remark, "We will bury you" was directed at capitalism and all capitalist societies - especially the USA. Over the years, I was often reminded of that remark especially in 1989-1990 when the fall of the Berlin Wall signaled the end of the Soviet Union was near.
