THE CINCINNATI POST

The Cincinnati Post, our evening newspaper, has announced that it will cease operation as of the end of this year. Too bad.

In 1881, two brothers named Wellman started a newspaper in Cincinnati called The Penny Paper. Two years later, E.W.Scripps took control of the paper and changed it's name to The Penny Post. In 1890, they changed the name to The Cincinnati Post.

In 1958, The Post purchased The Cincinnati Times-Star and operated until 1974 as The Cincinnati Post & Times-Star. Note that, at one time, there was a Spirit of the Times and a Cincinnati Daily Star. When I was growing up, we subscribed to The Cincinnati Times Star.

Newspapers provide information. Lord knows, there is more than one way to look at any story. Sadly, we will now have only one point of view available in the print media. There are probably few who care. The Post's circulation dropped from 270,000 in 1960 to 27,000 now. More and more, people go to television and the Internet for news coverage. Closing down newspapers is an inevitable thing, I guess, but its still sad and not good for the country if you ask me.
