By now, almost everyone in the country has heard of David Beckham. He and his wife Victoria, once known as Posh Spice of the Spice Girls, have moved to southern California and he will play futbol (soccer) for the LA Galaxy in the MLS. It doesn't do that much for me.
For the last three years, Beckham had been playing for Real Madrid in Spain and before that he played for Manchester United in England in the Premier League. He also was the midfielder for the British National Team in world events.
Manchester United is one of the most famous sports teams in the world. They gave up their captain to Real Madrid reluctantly and are constantly on the lookout for new talent. Well, they just signed a nine-year-old. Oh, yeah.
It seems, Rhain Davis, was tearing up his under-10 league in Australia and his grandfather in England took amateur film of him, spliced together a highlight reel and put it on a DVD. He sent it to the Premier League champion Manchester United and they liked what they saw. Young Rhain has moved to England to continue his education and to refine his skills.
It turns out that Manchester signs about 40 kids a year that are this age. They are given one-year renewable contracts. As long as they continue to develop, they are resigned. I hope American sports never gets to this point.
The idea of pimping your child to a professional sports team via a DVD is a new slant that was bound to come. In case you are thinking of doing it yourself, you can see the DVD that Rhain's grandfather sent on YouTube.
