CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

On Monday, the Bengals welcomed the New England Patriots into the Jungle. The place was buzzin' from the beginning but soon mellowed into a dull hum. The Pats outclassed Marvin's spoiled brats by a long shot and won easily 34-13. Cincinnati has two weeks to get healthy and figure out how to compete in the NFL.

Marvin Lewis' diatribe at his weekly press conference focused on selfishness. This was followed by immature Chad Johnson claiming that the critical pass interception in last week's game was his fault and not Palmer's as Carson had claimed. Give me a break.

On Wednesday, Cincinnati native and UC graduate Kevin Youkilis homered for the Boston Red Sox as they went up one game on the Angels in the ALDS.

On Thursday, the University of Cincinnati basketball team announced that Mike Williams had torn his achilles tendon and will miss the upcoming season. Williams is a 6 foot-7 inch, 240 pound power forward who transferred from Texas. He was being counted on to start in that position for the Cats in the upcoming season.

On Friday night in high school football, McNicholas blasted Fenwick 44-3, Wilmington lost to Amelia, Middletown topped Hamilton, and Reading beat Mariemont. In the big school battles, Elder outscored Moeller 49-33, St X swamped LaSalle 35-7 and Colerain shut out Lakota West 44-0.

On Saturday night in New Jersey, #20 UC Bearcats outlasted #21 Rutgers 28-23 to extend their winning streak to nine games, 6-0 on the year. It was by far the Cats toughest test of the year and they used a familiar formula for the win. Cincinnati intercepted three passes to extend the national #1 ranking in that department. They were able to keep running back and Heisman hopeful Ray Rice to moderate yards. Ben Mauk completed enough passes and ran for enough yards to seal the victory. Can you believe it? UC is bowl eligible! Sunday night the new AP poll was released and UC stood at number 15. WOW!
