CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

Reds COO, John Allen, announced his resignation effective the end of the year. He was the top man when Marge Schott sold the club to Carl Lindner. Allen will not be replaced.

The UC football team climbed back into the top 25 rankings with their win over UCONN last Saturday. This weeks meeting with #5 West Virginia is sold out and is being played in prime time nationally.

XU met Miami at Millett Hall on Tuesday night. They led by 11 at the half and had a 1 point lead with 6 seconds to go when they fouled a 3-point shooter. He made all three free throws. The Muskies had a good shot at the end but Drew Lavender's shot was blocked and they lost 59-57. Derrick Brown had 12 points to lead Xavier.

UC got an official Letter-of-Intent from two basketball recruits for next year. Yancy Gates, a 6'9" 255 lb power forward from Cincinnati Withrow and Cashmere Wright, a 6'0" point guard from Savannah, Georgia.

Cincinnati Reds icon and long time announcer, Joe Nuxhall died late Thursday night. He will forever be known as the youngest person ever to play major league baseball. He pitched at 15 years of age for the Reds. RIP

Friday night, the Bearcats played the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on the hardwood of the Shoemaker Center and won easily, 74-59. Deonta Vaughn had a career high 36 points including nine 3-pointers.

St. Xavier met Colerain at UC's Nippert stadium on Friday night in a classic battle of big school powers. The Bombers advanced in the Ohio playoffs by winning 29-14. Moeller chose to announce during this game that head coach Bob Crable's contract would not be renewed. Wow!
In division III, Monroe upset Indian Hill 31-28 to advance to the state semifinals and in division II Anderson upset Turpin, their unbeaten neighbor, 24-23.

On Saturday night, the UC Bearcat football team played West Virginia with the Big East title and a possible trip to a BCS bowl game on the line. The Cats played well but couldn't get the running game going. The Mountaineers' pass rush had quarterback Ben Mauk throwing on the run most of the night. He was sacked 5 times and had an interception. Still, Cincy had a chance to the last play as they went down by 5, 28-23.

Sunday, the Arizona Cardinals won their first game in Cincinnati ever, 35-27. Carson Palmer threw four interceptions for the first time in his career, three to Antrel Rolle who returned all of them for touchdowns, though the third one was called back for a blocking penalty. Chad Johnson chipped in with a critical fumble and Chris Henry had two big dropped passes. This team is a mess.
