CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

On Wednesday night, the Bearcats took on number 2 ranked Memphis at Shoemaker Center. Cincinnati played about as good as you could expect but lost 79-69. Deonta Vaughn led the Cats with 20 points and super-freshman Derrick Rose had 29 for the Tigers.

Moeller hired former Roger Bacon head coach John Rodenberg to lead their football program. He is the school's fifth coach in its 50 year history. Rodenberg led Covington Catholic to the Kentucky state championship a year ago. Fenwick lost to Badin and is now 1-7. Hamilton High is 3-7 and Wilmington is 5-3.

On Saturday afternoon, Xavier played number 12 ranked Tennessee at the Cintas Center. It was an exciting contest that the Musketeers led by four with four minutes remaining. Down the stretch, they just couldn't make plays and lost 82-75. UT finished with a 13-2 run. Stanley Burrell had 18 for the Muskies.

Also on Saturday afternoon, UC played in the PapaJohns.com bowl in Birmingham, Alabama and won 31-21. It was not pretty but the win was satisfying. It made it a 10 win season for the Bearcats; their first in over fifty years. It also assures they will be in the top 20 in the country in the final poles. Its the first time that has ever happened. Ben Mauch completed 30 of 52 passes for 344 yards and four touchdowns.

On Sunday afternoon, the Cleveland Bowns came into Paul Brown Stadium and played like the Bengals have played most of the year. Even though Carson Palmer was still throwing to people in both colored jerseys the Browns outdid him and lost 19-14.

On Sunday night, the UC Bearcat basketball team played North Carolina State of the ACC at the Wolfpack's home court and lost 85-77. The Cats fell behind by eight early and never could get over the hump. They closed to within three points several times but couldn't get the lead. Deonta Vaughn had 19 for Cincinnati.
