The battle is won! Maybe? It took a secret weapon but, finally, the squirrels seem to be uninterested in the bird feeders. The secret weapon is SAFFRON.
Saffron is a spice. I hear it's the world's most expensive spice by weight. It is derived from the flower of the saffron crocus. It can be used as a coloring agent and has for centuries been valued by some as a medicinal ingredient. Best of all, it is a pungent spice with a smell akin to hay or dried grass.
The plant puts off seeds - I bought some and put them in my feeders - and the squirrels don't like them. Well, one squirrel is the exception...I think he has a stopped up nose. We'll have to see how it goes in the next week or so.
