RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

APRIL 9

This is a day in history when strange things happened.

1) On this date in 1991, Georgia declared its independence from the Soviet Union. Can you believe that it still takes so long to drive through Atlanta on I-75?

2) In 1975 on this date, the first game was played in the second oldest professional basketball league. It is the Philippine Basketball Association. (This might be a little like the '6-foot and under league' I used to play in) I could have guessed for a month and not come up with the Philippines as the home of the second oldest professional basketball league.

3) On this date in 1967, the Boeing 737 took its maiden flight. Can you believe that this is still the standard aircraft for many air lines. Every plane in the Southwest Air Lines fleet is a 737. Talk about yesterday's technology...I trust they've been updated a little.

4) In 1953 on this date, Warner Brothers released the first 3-D movie. It was called The House of Wax. People flocked to theaters and donned the special glasses and began spilling soft drinks and popcorn all over themselves. Fifty-five years later and they're still trying to work out the kinks.

5) On this date in 1865, Confederate (the South) General Robert E. Lee surrendered his troops, the Army of Northern Virginia, to U.S. Grant (of the North) at Appomattox Courthouse near Lynchburg in southern Virginia to end the Civil War. (I think they all got there norths and souths mixed up) I've always been amazed that the Mason Dixon Line extended north of Washington D.C.
