CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

The Reds had a four-game series with the Florida Marlins to open the week. The Marlins had the best record in baseball when they arrived. Amazingly, Cincinnati won three in a row and managed to have the fourth rained out instead of pitching Matt Belisle. The downer was that Jeff Keppinger fractured his left patella while batting and will be out four to six weeks. He was leading the Reds in hitting. Youngster Paul Janish (pronounced yawnish) was called up to fill his roster spot. Janish got the extra-inning, game-winning, walk-off hit in his first major league game.

Ken Griffey Jr. paid off a debt he had with pitcher Josh Fogg by putting 150,000 pennies in his locker. That's $1500. That's 60 sixteen-pound boxes of pennies.

The Indians from the 'Mistake on the Lake' visited for the weekend. Adam Dunn, who has been batting seventh all week, got the game winning RBI with a walk on Friday night and he hit a walk-off home run on Saturday and added another homer on Sunday as the home team completed the sweep. Young Edinson Volquez is now 7-1 with the best ERA in the majors.

Six wins and no losses for the week. Absolutely amazing! The Reds are now 21 and 23 on the season and in fourth place in their division. This coming week they have three games scheduled in LA against the Dodgers and four in San Diego against the Padres.

The Bengals were running their OTA (organized team activities) this week and next. They are voluntary practices. Our number 1 and 2 receivers have not been in attendance so far.

Local sportsman Jerry Carroll, owner of the Kentucky Speedway, had the fourth place finisher in the Preakness Stakes on Saturday. Racecar Rhapsody needed good eyes to see Big Brown at the finish.
