MARTIN VAN BUREN

Martin Van Buren was the eighth president of the United States. He was the first president born an American citizen. He was the first president to have other than English ancestry. His family was Dutch. Because of this, he was also the first and only president ever to have a primary language other than English. Van Buren also served as Vice President and Secretary of State (under Andrew Jackson). The only other person to hold all three of these top positions was Thomas Jefferson. Earlier in his career, he was Governor of New York and before that, U.S. Senator. He was a key organizer of the Democrat Party. Van Buren had bright red hair.
