The Games of the XXIX Olympiad (Summer Olympics) have officially begun. For the first time ever, they are taking place in China. 205 nations have sent 10,000 athletes to compete.

The first modern Olympic games took place in 1896 in Athens, Greece. Only 14 nations competed. Four years later, they were in Paris, France and then came St. Louis, Missouri in 1904. Los Angeles has hosted the games twice. The only other and most recent U.S. city to host the Summer Games was Atlanta, Georgia in 1996.
