SPORTS

More than great sports moments, great sports accomplishments intrigue me. I mean things that take longer than one play or one game. Each age has its events.

My dad was around when Babe Ruth hit an unbelievable 60 home runs in one season...when Joe DiMaggio had a hit in 56 straight games...when Jesse Owens stunned Hitler's Germany by dominating track and field in the '36 Olympics.

In my age, I witnessed Pete Rose break Ty Cobb's hit record. I was around when Roger Maris hit 61 and when Sammy, Mark and Berry juiced their way to new heights. I saw Muhammad Ali climb to the pinnacle of boxing and defeat all comers. I remember the Dolphins going undefeated in a whole season. I remember Oscar Robertson averaging a triple-double for a season. I saw Mark Spitz win seven gold medals in the Olympics.

Those living today will talk about Michael Phelps for many years to come.
