CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

Happy Labor Day!

In weird sports news this week, it is reported that Chad Johnson has legally and officially changed his name to Chad Javon Ocho Cinco. He's still Ocho Psycho.

The Cincinnati Bearcats opened the college football season with a 40-7 thumping of Eastern Kentucky. I was at the game with about 29,000 friends and it was a lot of fun. The Bearcats seemed interested in slowly moving the ball down the field and having penalties call back touchdowns so they could try to score them again. It was never in doubt.

The Reds started the week with three in Houston and ended with three at home against the Giants. The Astros denied the Reds again of a winning series taking the second two out of three from our youngsters. The Giants are as weak as the Reds and they proved it at GABP this weekend. The Reds swept San Francisco and finished the week at 4 and 2. Another young pitcher had his first start in the majors for the Reds. Ramon Ramirez got the win on Saturday.

The Bengals played an inter-squad scrimmage against the Indianapolis Colts' back-ups. It was meaningless except to the twenty some-odd players that got cut this weekend. Three of those turned out to be ex-pro bowl selections; Willie Anderson, Rudi Johnson and Deltha O'Neal. Carson's brother, Jordan, made the team as the third string QB. More late changes are possible.

In high school football, Fenwick came from being behind to beat their old rival, Monroe, 28-21. Wilmington lost to Miami Trace 35-21. Purcell-Marion was edged by Norwood 19-13. New Richmond shut out Mariemont 34-0. McNicholas fell to Loveland 28-21. Hamilton High topped Taft 16-0.
