RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

On a windy Wednesday night in Dayton, the Flyers outplayed the 14th ranked Xavier Musketeers by a 71-58 score. It was the Muskies second straight loss and dropped their record to 20-4 (8-2 in the A-10). I think a weakness in Xavier's guard play has been exposed. Derrick Brown had 17 for the Cincinnatians.

Also on Wednesday, the resurgent Bearcats hosted the St. Johns Red Storm at Fifth Third Arena and handled them 71-61. Cincinnati had opened a 20+ point lead in the first half but had to fend off a late charge when Deonta Vaughn was sidelined with four fouls. Freshman Yancey Gates scored a season high 21 points. The Cats are now 17-8 and 7-5 in the Big East. Dare anyone mention the field of 64?

In high school ball on Wednesday, sophomore Taylor Sizer put up 20 in Mariemont's 59-50 win over Reading. Taylor followed that up with eleven in a win on Friday night against Deer Park.

Both local college teams played again on Saturday, XU met Fordham at home to sprinted out to a big lead and never looked back. They had subs and walk-ons in the game early as they won 88-53. Six players were in double figures including Brad Redford with a career high 15 points on five threes.
The Bearcats were in Pittsburgh to play the 4th ranked Panthers and ran into a solid team that was just too talented for them. Pitt won 85-69. Mike Williams had 17 for the Cats.

Reds' pitchers and catchers are in camp in Sarasota. Others trying to get a head start at making the team are also showing up. Everyone must report by next weekend. Shortstop Alex Gonzalez, who missed all of last year with a knee injury, has been given the go-ahead to practice.
