RANDOM MUSINGS FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL

LEGS

I'm not really a 'leg man'. Its not my favorite part of the body and not the most mysterious. But they are very interesting.

Standing is a very difficult thing to learn for we humans. Newborn horses get up and walk on four legs in a matter of hours. Newborn people take about a year to figure out how to stand and walk.

If you want a camera to stand on its own, you need a tripod . . . that's a three legged structure, of course. A sturdy table requires four legs. Two legs wont hold up a camera and certainly not a table. How is it that we are able to stand on two legs?

Two things come into force when we stand on two legs i.e. balance and muscle control. Balance, of course, is centered in our ears and eyes. Alcohol and blond hair can hinder these senses. Muscle control is another thing. It requires us to control about 300 muscles to stand. Large and little bitty muscles from head to toe are working when we stand. That's the reason it is so tiring.

The next time you're just standing around, think about how amazing it is that you can stand on two legs . . . and change your position often to put the pressure on different muscles.
