CINCINNATI SPORTS LAST WEEK

UC named a new women's basketball coach this week. They plucked Jamelle Elliott from UCONN where they know how to win national championships. Jamelle was an assistant there for 12 years and has five national championship rings.

The Reds had a two-game set with the Marlins in Florida. The opener went 14 innings and the Reds came up on the short end of 3-2 pitchers battle. Edinson Volquez pitched 8 scoreless innings the next night and Brandon Phillips knocked in 6 runs to lead Cincinnati to a 7-0 win.

The Bengals released Levi Jones. He never was the same after he got beaten up and robbed in Las Vegas a year and a half ago. I think it ruined his self confidence. What happens in Vegas should stay in Vegas.

The Reds played the Brewers a two-game set at GABP. Milwaukee bombed Bronson Arroyo the first night and the Reds bounced back the next behind Micah Owings for the split. Top hitters Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips were out of the line-up with the flu. Division leading St. Louis came to town for a weekend series and the Reds took two out of three. Cards won an extra inning tilt on Sunday in which the Reds hit five homers.

The Bengals picked up safety Roy Williams from the Dallas Cowboys. The five-time pro bowl player broke his forearm twice last year. This could be a real find. Next, they pulled off their first player-for-player trade of the century. They traded on unused defensive lineman to the Rams for running back Brian Leonard. Leonard was a second round draft choice two years ago and sat out last year with an injury.

In the Fox Sports MLB power rankings the Reds stand 9th in all the majors and 4th in the National League.
