GEORGE M

George M. Cohan was America's first great show business super star. It is said the he "owned Broadway" in the first decade of the twentieth century and beyond. Cohan was a song and dance man who later became a leading songwriter in "tin pan alley". He penned such songs as "Give My Regards to Broadway" and "You're a Grand Old Flag" and "Yankee Doodle Dandy".

"George M" was a Broadway musical about his life which included many songs which he wrote. One lyric he wrote to "Yankee Doodle Dandy" goes "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy ... born on the Fourth of July..." Well, I always thought he was born on July 4 but now I find that its not true. His birth certificate shows his date of birth as July 3, 1878. I'm scandalized!
:D
