On this date in 1956, President Dwight David Eisenhower signed a joint resolution of Congress making "In God We Trust" the official national motto of the United States of America. This motto had appeared on coins since 1864. Since 1938, all U.S. coins bear that inscruption.
Most states have their own motto but only one uses "In God We Trust" and that is Florida.
