Dinner bell, Liberty Bell, Ma Bell; do these things ring with you?
I had no idea that the founder of the successful fast food chain, Taco Bell, was ex-U.S. Marine Glen Bell. He started with a hot dog stand in San Bernadino, California right after World War II. He sold one stand and bought another and added tacos as an offering at his stand. He went through several different Mexican style restaurants and sold each to build something better. Finally, in 1962 he settled on the Taco Bell concept and built the first one in Downey, California. In 1964, he successfully franchised the operation and in 1978 sold it all to PepsiCo. Today it is part of Yum! Brands. In 2005, they did $1.8 billion in sales. That's a lot of tacos.
