Most kids are back to school by now. Aside from actually learning something, parents worry about sickness. All those kids jammed together all of a sudden is a recipe for transfer of virus and other bad things. It usually doesn't hit until November or December. Do you know why? Do you know the best way to prevent it?
Here are the big factors. Number 1 is the tilt of the Earth. Say what? That's right. It causes a deficiency in vitamin D intake because we get most of that necessary vitamin from the sun. In the Summer, there is approximately 15 hours of sun light per day and kids stay out doors a good deal of the time. In Winter, sun light hours can go down to 10 per day. That's 50% less sun light. We might receive 50% less vitamin D in December as we did in June just because of the tilt of the Earth. Add in that kids don't go or aren't allowed outside as much in some climates and you have a recipe for illness.
Number 2 is holidays. Our bodies are magnificent machines but they can get overloaded. Processing extra refined sugar is such hard work that it gets in the way of our resistance to disease. Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas are prime suspects in undermining our resistance because of sweets.
Number 3 is simple rules of hygiene. Children don't have a good idea of how disease is transmitted from one person to another...but they should. Schools should make it a priority.
